Is this the way I'm going to leave?
Like the flowers that perish?
Will nothing remain in my name?
Nothing of my fame upon this earth?

At least flowers--at least songs!

(From the Songs of Huexotzingo--translation is mine.)

I remember first seeing this inscription many years ago when I visited the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City, Mexico. As I went from gallery to gallery, viewing antiquities created by a people long gone, long assimilated into a European culture and a more modern world, I was moved by the fact that our time on this earth is short, and we all leave something behind. We can choose what remains of us, however. I'd like my part to be words, art, and life.
